With the rapid growth in internet adoption within Uganda, every company not only wants to have a website but to have as many people visit it every day as possible.
In this article I share with you 4 key things these top ugandan websites have in common that might have helped them get to the top, why - because it can help you get there.
The data below was sourced from multiple sources including Alexa.com (which ranks websites using 3 month average traffic) and analysed by the team at dreamstar digital using other tools to ensure accuracy to the point of last 30 days.
According to Uganda Communications Commission more than 14.5 million Ugandans have access to the internet.
SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR UGANDAN WEBSITES (BY SITE VISITS)
Whereas www.mtn.co.ug and www.ura.go.ug have the highest numbers of page views every month, www.monitor.co.ug andwww.newvision.co.ug are the leading in terms of visitor count. Some of the above websites recieve as many as 50,000 visits and as high as 230,000/- page views from Ugandans on a daily basis.
Here are a few things they have in common.
- 1. The average load time for the above websites is 8 seconds.
- 8 out the 10 websites load in less than 10 seconds
- 2 load in 1 second. Only 1 loads in over 30 seconds
Whereas page speed may not cause first time visitors to check into a website, it does determine whether people will return to a website or not. In fact it is even used by google to determine whether to rank your website at the top in search results or elsewhere.
- All are updated more than once every week
- 9 of 10 are updated multiple times every day
Major search engines tend to serve the freshest content to searchers. Even better, people will only frequent a site if there is fresh, valuable content in there for them.
Apart from Howwe.biz, the rest of the websites listed above receive more direct traffic than search and social and referral traffic combined.
- All are active on Facebook and Twitter
- All post to Facebook and twitter several times every day
- 9/10 have social sharing buttons in pages.
Whereas Social media activity will not directly make your website to rank number 1 or number last on google search, it can certainly increase the number visitors to your website thus search rank.
www.chimpreports.com for example gets over 30% of her traffic from social media.
- 8 out of 10 have sitemaps.
Sitemaps directly affect the search engine ranking of a website by alerting search engines as soon as an update has been made in the website.
Not having sitemap makes search engines to show old content in search results or not show your website at all as they (search engines) favour more up to date content.
Are you going to start implementing any of the above in your own website? Can above information help anyone you know? Share
