Marketing and sales guru Seth Godin said the Internet is the first medium invented in 100 years that wasn't invented to make advertisers happy'. And same applies to WhatsApp. However, there are some WhatsApp features that seem to have been designed specifically for marketers, salesmen and business people in general - me and you.
An estimated 3 billion smartphones are active around the world and WhatsApp is active in more than a billion of them. In Uganda it is unthinkable to have a Smartphone and not have WhatsApp in it.
In fact the only 'social media platform' several holders are active in is 'WhatsApp'. This is especially common among the old (55+) and they so young (16-18).
Let’s face it; if SMS did not come first, it might have never have have had a chance in the face of instant messengers.
Though many people still think of the WhatsApp as a merely a casual ‘chatting tool’, a hundreds of smart marketers, sales people and entrepreneurs are already milking a cow they did feed; leveraging on the power of WhatsApp to win at business. From using it to acquire new customers, cross-sell to existing customers, win referrals, answer customer queries…. the opportunities are simply endless.
4 WhatsApp Features Your Business Should Start Using Immediately
Broadcast Lists are saved lists of message recipients that you can repeatedly send broadcast messages to without having to select them each time (you want to send a message).
With the Broadcast List feature, you can send a message to several of your contacts at once yet receive any replies directly without other recipients of the original message seeing it.
Broadcast List is the WhatsApp duplicate of group messages (bulk sms) in traditional SMS and Bulk Email.
You can use the feature to send general communication to your customers like seasons greetings, promotional offers, or just after purchase thank-yous.
2. WhatsApp Group.
One of the most popular WhatsApp features, 'WhatsApp Group' feature lets you chat with up to 256 people at once.
With the 'Group' feature, there are group managers who have the authority to add and or remove members from the group among other things.
Every member of a group gets to see the other members and all messages/content shared in the group and can freely participate in any conversation.
WhatsApp groups are ideal ideal for rallying people with shared interests behind a product/event/service and you simply want to conduct research among your customers. Also, the feature if used to for engagement among peers can be used for advertising by occasionally posting relevant adverts into the groups.
This feature is reported by many to be a successful tool for promoting events in particular.
3. WhatsApp Status (Stories)
Introduced in 2017, Status is a clone of Snapchat Stories and the equivalent of Facebook Stories (Messenger Day) and Instagram Stories.
WhatsApp Status allows you to share text, photos, videos and animated GIFs that disappear after 24 hours.
In order to send and receive status updates to and from your contacts, both you and your contacts must have each other's phone numbers saved in your address book.
Status is the ultimate ad-feature in WhatsApp. Armed with a well-crafted photo, GIF, text message or 30 second video clip (video Ad) all you need to do is add it to your status and sit down and watch your advert run.
What's even better with Status is that it's viewing is optional and you can know who of your contacts saw your status.
4. 'Profile Picture' and 'About'
Your profile photo is like your face in the platform and your 'about' is brief bio. (description).
Until you change your profile picture and bio it will remain visible to those you allow to see it in your privacy settings.
